Zyloric 100 mg is a prescription urate lowering medicine containing allopurinol. It is designed for ongoing control of excessive uric acid and prevention of urate deposition, not for immediate relief of pain during an acute gout flare.
Approved uses:
• Reduction of uric acid formation in gout, urate deposits and uric acid kidney stones when treatment is clinically indicated.
• Prevention or management of excessive uric acid in selected high cell turnover disorders or during certain cancer treatments under specialist care.
• Management of selected recurrent kidney stones associated with excess urinary urate when lifestyle and hydration measures are insufficient.
Therapeutic role:
Allopurinol inhibits xanthine oxidase, reducing the production of uric acid in blood and urine. With consistent treatment and monitoring it helps prevent future crystal deposition, gout attacks, tophi and selected uric acid stones; improvement is gradual rather than immediate.
Active ingredient and composition:
Each tablet contains allopurinol 100 mg. Zyloric 100 mg tablets contain lactose; patients with an intolerance should review the complete local excipient list before use.
How to use:
Take exactly as prescribed, commonly once daily after food with water. Treatment is usually started at a low dose such as 100 mg daily and adjusted according to serum urate, kidney function and response. Maintain adequate hydration unless fluid intake is restricted. This is long term urate lowering therapy and is not a rapid pain reliever for an acute gout attack. Do not stop or restart it without medical advice.
Important safety information:
Stop the medicine and obtain urgent medical advice at the first appearance of a rash, blistering, mouth sores, fever or facial swelling because rare severe reactions such as Stevens Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis or DRESS can occur. Kidney or liver impairment may require a lower dose. Important interactions include azathioprine, mercaptopurine, some anticoagulants, ACE inhibitors and certain antibiotics. Starting treatment may temporarily trigger a gout flare; the prescriber may add preventive therapy.
Medical disclaimer:
This prescription medicine must be used only for the patient and condition for which it was prescribed. The information provided supports, but does not replace, the local package leaflet or the advice of a physician or pharmacist. Seek urgent medical care for a severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
