Emla Cream 5 % is a topical local anaesthetic cream used to numb intact skin before needle procedures and selected superficial procedures.

Ingredients and Composition: Each gram contains lidocaine 25 mg and prilocaine 25 mg, providing a total local-anaesthetic concentration of 5%.

Directions for Use: Apply a thick layer to intact skin and cover with an occlusive dressing. The amount and application time depend on age, area and procedure; intact skin commonly requires 1–2 hours. Remove the cream before the procedure. Use on genital mucosa or leg ulcers only under professional supervision.

Safety Information: Temporary blanching, redness, swelling or burning may occur. Rare risks include methaemoglobinaemia and systemic local-anaesthetic toxicity. Avoid use in amide-local-anaesthetic allergy, in the eyes or on a damaged eardrum; strict dose limits apply in infants. Blue-grey skin, breathing difficulty or marked drowsiness requires urgent care.
