Aldactone 100 mg is a prescription potassium sparing diuretic containing spironolactone. It reduces sodium and water retention while limiting potassium loss and is selected according to the cause of oedema or aldosterone excess.

Approved uses:
• Congestive heart failure with fluid retention, including selected severe stable heart failure regimens.
• Ascites and oedema associated with liver cirrhosis, malignant ascites or nephrotic syndrome when clinically appropriate.
• Diagnosis and treatment of primary aldosteronism under medical supervision.

Therapeutic role:
Spironolactone blocks aldosterone receptors in the kidney. The expected effect is removal of excess sodium and water, improvement of oedema or ascites and, in eligible heart failure patients, support for the overall heart failure treatment plan.

Active ingredient and composition:
Each film coated tablet contains spironolactone 100 mg. The official Aldactone formulation also contains calcium sulfate dihydrate, corn starch, polyvinylpyrrolidone, magnesium stearate, peppermint flavour, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol and yellow coating containing titanium dioxide and iron oxide.

How to use:
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably with a meal when given once daily. The 100 mg strength may be used in oedema or aldosterone related regimens, but the daily dose varies widely by diagnosis, kidney function, potassium level and response. Do not change the dose and do not use potassium supplements or potassium salt substitutes unless specifically directed.

Important safety information:
Potassium and kidney function must be checked before and during treatment. Do not use with high potassium, anuria, significant acute kidney failure, Addison disease or another potassium sparing diuretic unless a specialist specifically manages the combination. ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, NSAID painkillers, trimethoprim combinations, heparins and potassium products can markedly increase the risk of hyperkalaemia. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require medical review.
