Dimet G 2 mg 500 mg is a prescription combination for type 2 diabetes containing glimepiride and metformin. The 30 tablet pack combines two complementary mechanisms to improve blood glucose control when a clinician considers the fixed combination appropriate.
Approved uses:
• Improvement of glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes when diet, exercise and the existing medicine regimen are not sufficient and the combination is appropriate.
• It is not intended for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Therapeutic role:
Glimepiride increases insulin release from functioning pancreatic beta cells, while metformin reduces liver glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity. Together they help lower fasting and post meal glucose, but the response must be assessed with glucose and HbA1c monitoring.
Active ingredient and composition:
Each tablet contains glimepiride 2 mg and metformin hydrochloride 500 mg. Inactive ingredients must be checked in the leaflet supplied with the local pack, particularly if the patient has a known allergy or intolerance.
How to use:
Take only in the dose prescribed, usually with a meal to reduce stomach upset. The dose depends on current diabetes treatment, kidney function and glucose readings. Maintain the prescribed diet and activity plan and monitor blood glucose as directed. Do not double a missed dose. Carry a rapid source of glucose because glimepiride can cause low blood glucose.
Important safety information:
Low blood glucose can occur, especially with missed meals, alcohol, strenuous exercise or other diabetes medicines. Metformin can rarely cause lactic acidosis, a medical emergency, particularly with significant kidney impairment, severe dehydration, low oxygen states or heavy alcohol intake. Kidney function should be assessed. The clinical team may instruct temporary interruption around iodinated contrast studies, major surgery or serious acute illness. Long term metformin can reduce vitamin B12 levels.
Medical disclaimer:
This prescription medicine must be used only for the patient and condition for which it was prescribed. The information provided supports, but does not replace, the local package leaflet or the advice of a physician or pharmacist. Seek urgent medical care for a severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
