Eltroxin 50 mcg is a prescription thyroid hormone replacement containing levothyroxine sodium. This pack contains 100 tablets and is used to restore an appropriate thyroid hormone level when the thyroid does not produce enough hormone.

Approved uses:
• Control of hypothyroidism in adults.
• Congenital hypothyroidism in infants and acquired hypothyroidism or juvenile myxoedema in children under specialist dosing and monitoring.

Therapeutic role:
Levothyroxine replaces thyroxine, the natural T4 hormone. Correct dosing normalises thyroid hormone activity and TSH over time, helping relieve symptoms such as fatigue, cold intolerance and slowed metabolism when those symptoms are caused by hypothyroidism. It is not a weight loss medicine.

Active ingredient and composition:
Each tablet contains 50 micrograms of anhydrous levothyroxine sodium. The official Eltroxin formulation contains 31.88 mg lactose per tablet, sodium citrate, maize starch, powdered acacia and magnesium stearate.

How to use:
Take the exact dose prescribed, usually once daily before breakfast or the first meal, with water and at a consistent time. The dose is individualized from symptoms, age, heart status and TSH or thyroid hormone tests; the tablet strength is not automatically the required daily dose. Separate iron, calcium and many antacids from levothyroxine by the interval advised by the pharmacist, commonly at least four hours. Do not switch formulation or stop treatment without review.

Important safety information:
Thyroid tests are required after starting, changing dose or changing formulation. Excess replacement can strain the heart and cause symptoms of overactive thyroid, especially in older adults or people with coronary disease. Tell the prescriber about heart disease, adrenal insufficiency, diabetes, pregnancy, anticoagulants and medicines or supplements that affect absorption. Seek review for chest pain, persistent rapid or irregular heartbeat, severe agitation or unexplained shortness of breath.
