Salurex 40 mg is a prescription loop diuretic containing furosemide. The 20 tablet pack increases removal of excess sodium and water through the kidneys and is used when fluid retention or selected blood pressure conditions require a potent diuretic.

Approved uses:
• Oedema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis or kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome.
• Selected hypertension regimens or peripheral oedema when the prescriber considers furosemide appropriate.
• Management of reduced urine output in selected renal impairment settings under close supervision.

Therapeutic role:
Furosemide reduces reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the loop of Henle, producing increased urine flow. The expected effect is reduced swelling and fluid congestion and, in selected regimens, lower blood pressure. It treats excess fluid but not the underlying cause by itself.

Active ingredient and composition:
Each tablet contains furosemide 40 mg. The complete inactive ingredient list should be checked in the leaflet supplied with the local Salurex pack if the patient has an allergy or intolerance.

How to use:
Take exactly as prescribed. A 40 mg morning dose is a common adult starting schedule for oedema, but the dose and frequency vary greatly with the condition and kidney response. If more than one dose is prescribed, the second is often taken earlier in the day to reduce night urination. Weighing, blood pressure, kidney function and electrolytes may be monitored. Do not double a missed dose.

Important safety information:
Excessive diuresis can cause dehydration, low blood pressure and loss of sodium, potassium, magnesium or calcium. Tell the prescriber about kidney or liver disease, gout, diabetes, urinary obstruction, sulfonamide allergy and all other diuretics or blood pressure medicines. NSAID painkillers, lithium, digoxin and some antibiotics can be clinically important interactions. Report marked thirst, confusion, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, fainting or a major change in urine output.
